Going green can be a hugely beneficial step for garden centres & farm shops environmentally and in terms of reducing costs and wastage

The technological advances in catering equipment in recent years have seen significant improvements in energy efficiency, allowing operators to use equipment that uses less electricity or lasts longer before needing to be replaced. Often this equipment is more expensive than corresponding pieces of kit, but it is important to look at the long game. The savings that can be accrued over the lifetime of an energy-efficient model for example, could easily outweigh the extra cost in the initial purchase.

"Some caterers are still not willing to pay a premium for a more energy-efficient appliance," notes Glenn Roberts, chair of CESA. "This is shortsighted. As energy prices rise, a more efficient product will pay for itself very quickly, and keep paying for itself, saving hugely over the years."

It is also always worth looking at what is on offer and what has been newly launched. The drive to improve energy efficiency has only been getting stronger, as demand from customers grows. As a result, innovations in all forms of equipment can be seen and should be investigated. Getting the most up-to-date model could provide the missing link to not only reducing energy bills but also improving overall performance.

"Don't neglect the basics" says Bob Wood, director of DC Warewashing and Icemaking Systems, "regular cleaning and maintenance of warewashing equipment is essential to ensure the performance and energy efficiency of your machine, prolong its life and guarantee a hygienic clean and sparkling results every time. After referring to the manufacturer's operating instructions and guidance issued with the machine, ensure that responsible staff are trained and instructed on the proper use of the machine and cleaning requirements."
